Your Complaint/Concern
During my visit to the Imbotero Research Center situated in the Imbotero Creek within a Warrau community in Region #1, I made several observations, both positive and concerning, that I would like to bring to your attention.Upon arrival, the journey through the serene Warrau community to reach the research centre was strikingly peaceful and picturesque. However, upon approaching the entrance of the research centre, I noticed a sign that read "ONLY GUESTS ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT." This immediately gave me pause, as it conveyed a sense of exclusion rather than welcome, particularly in the home community of the Warrau people. This left me feeling uneasy about supporting an institution that might inadvertently contribute to the marginalization of a community that has historically faced prejudice and segregation.Additionally, I observed that there were only two staff members present during my visit, both women. It appeared that these dedicated individuals were responsible for a wide range of tasks, including meal preparation, hosting, serving, dishwashing, cleaning, table setting, housekeeping and whatever else was needed. I noticed that one of the staff members, whom I assumed to be the manager, was leaving around 8:45 pm on the evening I arrived via canoe and inquired about her journey. I was surprised to learn she was embarking on a 35-40 minute journey along the Imbotero Creek and into the main river to reach her home in the pitch darkness of night. This seemed concerning and unsustainable, regardless of whether the staff member is a Warrau or not. The following morning i woke up around 4am and noticed the said lady canoeing along the creek on her back to work to get breakfast started for us.Furthermore, I noted the presence of a modern boat with an engine at the facility's dock, alongside a well-maintained boat house. Given these observations, I believe it would be prudent to review the working hours, job responsibilities, working conditions and compensation structure for the staff to ensure fairness, safety and sustainability. These observations are shared with the utmost respect and a genuine desire to see equitable and supportive practices within the Imbotero Research Center, reflecting the values of inclusivity and dignity for all involved.
Did you have suggestions to solve?
yes
Your Suggestions
Increased staffing with specific roles should be implemented to reduce the pressure on 2 persons. The facility equipment (boat and engine) should be used to transport the staff if they are working outside of normal working hours.
